Taper lock bushes: Installation and Removal

What are taper lock bushes?

Taper lock bushes are used for the mechanical linking of a shaft to a pulley or a sprocket. Its tapered surface assists in its tightening to the shaft along with the matching component. The tool provides flexibility between the main components to be compatible with a number of shaft sizes.

The tapered lock bush involves a thread and a keyway that are machines in accordance with ISO standards. Tapered bush is a term used to quote other variants of the same name, tapered lock bush.  Removing the tapered bush is conveniently accomplished by using the bolts screwed into the holes of the bushing flange and tightening.

How to install taper lock bushes?

Step 1: Remove the secured coating from the bore, the bore of the hub, and the outside of the bush. You must ensure that the mating tapered surfaces are clean and free from oil and dirt. Afterward, insert the bush in the hub to line up the holes.

Step 2: Oil the thread and point so the grub screws or the thread and under the head of cap screws. Place the screws loosely in the holes that are threaded in the hub.

Step 3: Clean the shaft. Then, position the hub and bush to the shaft as a unit. Position it in the way you want it to, but remember that the bush will grip the shaft first. Only then will the hub be slightly drawn onto the bush.

Step 4: Use a hexagonal wrench to tighten the screws gradually. Do it alternately until they are fully secured. To increase the leverage, use a piece of pipe on the wrench.

How to remove taper lock bushes?

Step 1: Loosen all the screws via several turns. Remove a screw or two according to the number of jacking-off holes. Insert screws in the jacking-off holes after oiling the thread, the points of the grub screws, and the under-head of the cap screws.

Step 2: Alternately tighten the screws until the bush slackens in the hub and the assembly is free of the shaft. Remove the assembly after.

Step 3: A key is unnecessary for normal drives. But hammer against the large end of the bush using a block or sleeve to prevent damage if a key is not being used. This ensures the square seating of the bush in the bore. Using the key, the screws will turn more. Repeat the process of alternating hammering and screw tightening until the proper torque is obtained.

Step 4: Position the key in the shaft keyway before fitting the bush.

Step 5:Stop and check the tightness of the screws after the drive has been running under load for a short period of time. Fill the empty holes with grease to remove dirt.
